Octavia Art Gallery

Relocation of Uptown art gallery into a spacious and modern space in a historic context on “Gallery Row.”

Project Type: Historic Preservation, Commercial/Retail
Location: New Orleans, LA
Project Size: 2,600 Square Feet

Project Description

As part of the larger development of 800 Magazine, ground-floor spaces were reserved for commercial clients to engage pedestrians at street level and enhance the character of the Warehouse District. Octavia Gallery, launched in uptown New Orleans in 2008, fit well among the other galleries along Julia Street, where it could enjoy greater visibility and strengthen an already vibrant arts corridor.

In the tenant space along Julia Street, Octavia Gallery enjoys a generous frontage with large windows connecting its artists’ works to passersby, in direct support of its stated mission to bring “regional and international contemporary artists to New Orleans.”  The main gallery space is free of walls, but the regular column grid subdivides the space and allows for flexibility of exhibition design.  A smaller, subsidiary gallery accessible both through the main gallery and through a controlled alleyway allows for private showings and more discreet client meetings.
